Driving here

Can I drive on my own licence?

If you hold a Sri Lankan licence, yes. A foreign licence has to be recognised locally before you drive, which is a short administrative process rather than a test. Tell us which country issued your licence when you send a request and we will confirm exactly what is needed, what it costs and how long it takes. We can start it for you.

How old do I have to be?

Twenty-one, with at least a year of driving behind you. For the four-wheel drives and the van we ask for a little more experience, and we will say so when you enquire.

Can somebody else drive the car?

Yes, as long as we know who and they meet the same requirements. Add them when you send the request. An unnamed driver is not covered by the insurance, which is the whole reason we ask.

What are the roads actually like?

The expressways are straightforward. Everywhere else expects you to give way constantly, to buses above all. If it is your first time driving in Sri Lanka, a driver for the first day or two is usually money well spent.

Money

What does it cost?

Self-drive starts at LKR 6,500 a day for the Suzuki Alto. Every rate for every car is on the rates page, and it falls the longer you keep the car.

What deposit do you take?

LKR 25,000, held against damage and traffic fines. It is a hold, not a charge, and it is returned when the car comes back in the condition it left in.

How does fuel work?

You collect the car full and return it full. We do not mark fuel up and we do not add a refuelling fee if you bring it back as you found it.

Is there a distance limit?

Each car includes a daily allowance, shown on its own page, and the cost of an extra kilometre is shown next to it. Neither figure is hidden and neither changes after you book.

How do I pay?

Cash, bank transfer or card. We confirm the amount in writing before you collect the car, and nothing is taken from this website.

Booking and changes

Do I need an account?

No. There is no login on this site. You send a request, we reply, and that is the whole system.

Can I change or cancel?

Tell us as early as you can and we will do what we can. The exact notice period and any charge are set out in the terms of hire, and we will restate them in the reply that confirms your booking.

How far ahead should I book?

In December, January and over the April new year, as early as you can. The rest of the year a few days is usually enough, and we can often do same-day.

On the road

Will you meet me at the airport?

Yes. Give us the flight number and we will be there when you land, including outside office hours. The delivery charge is quoted with your rate.

Can I take the car to another city and leave it there?

Usually, for a one-way charge that depends on where. Ask when you send the request and we will price it.

What if the car breaks down?

Call us. Roadside cover runs for the whole hire and is already in the rate. If the car cannot be fixed where it stands, we get you another one.

Are child seats available?

Yes. Say the age of the child in the request so we fit the right one.
